Kapok fiber - a miracle of nature
The kapok tree is an impressive tree that can grow up to 50 meters tall and is native to the evergreen forests of Central and South America.
On tiered branches grow fruit capsules about 20 cm long, in which up to 100 pepper-sized seeds ripen, embedded in silky-soft fruit hairs, also known as plant down or kapok.
The kapok or wool tree is now found primarily in tropical regions of Asia. Growing wild, it is not found in plantations or monocultures, so no fertilizers or pesticides are required. At harvest time, the ripe capsules are picked by hand, opened, and dried in the sun. The airy, light fibers are then separated from the seeds in a fan chamber.
