Tussah silk is obtained from the cocoons of the silkworm caterpillar, which lives wild in Japan, China, and India. The caterpillars produce the silk thread they use to spin the cocoon from four glands located on their lower jaws. Two glands produce the material for the silk thread, and the other two glands produce the silk bast that covers the thread. The silkworm cocoons from which tussah silk is obtained have a diameter of 20-25 mm and are 30 mm long. The cocoon is formed during the pupation of the caterpillar into a butterfly.
Tussah silk is very lightweight and has a soft, delicate feel. Tussah silk is elastic and therefore almost wrinkle-free. It is quite tear- and abrasion-resistant, making it very durable, and has a high moisture absorption capacity (up to one-third of its total weight). Silk regulates temperature but is not particularly warm, as the silk yarns trap little insulating air and thus have a low heat retention capacity.
Tussah silk is a wild silk. Unlike farmed silk, the cocoons are only collected and unwound after the butterfly has emerged from the cocoon.
